In the ever-evolving landscape of heavyweight boxing, the question of rankings is always a hot topic. Johnny Nelson, a respected figure in the boxing community, recently asserted that Tyson Fury remains the second-best heavyweight in the world. However, a closer examination of Fury’s recent form suggests that this ranking might be more sentimental than factual.

Tyson Fury, known for his charismatic personality and impressive boxing skills, has had a tumultuous journey in the ring. His recent performances, however, have raised eyebrows among critics and fans alike. The British boxer’s latest comeback, as he puts it, is ‘to make boxing great again.’ But is his recent form truly reflective of a top-tier heavyweight?

Fury’s last significant bout was against Oleksandr Usyk, the current world heavyweight champion. Usyk, who will be facing kickboxer Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in Egypt, has proven himself to be the best heavyweight of the current era. In their recent encounters, Fury was twice outpointed by Usyk, which has led many to question Fury’s standing in the heavyweight division.

Adding to the intrigue, Fury has predicted that Usyk will be ‘begging’ him for a third fight by the end of 2026. This bold statement, while characteristic of Fury’s confident persona, does little to mask the fact that his recent performances have not been up to the high standards he has set in the past.

Moreover, the boxing world is abuzz with other significant matchups. Conor Benn, for instance, is set to fight Regis Prograis on the undercard of Fury’s return in London on April 11. This fight, forming the co-main event of Fury’s return against Arslanbek Makhmudov at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, adds another layer of excitement to the boxing calendar.

As the heavyweight division continues to heat up, it is crucial to evaluate boxers based on their recent performances rather than their past glories. While Tyson Fury’s contributions to the sport are undeniable, his recent form suggests that he may not be the second-best heavyweight in the world at this moment. Only time will tell if Fury can reclaim his former dominance and prove his critics wrong.
