In a stunning turn of events on May 2, 2025, Rolly Romero clinched the WBA interim welterweight title by defeating Ryan Garcia via unanimous decision. The judges’ scorecards read 115-112, 118-109, and 115-112, all in favor of Romero. Despite facing criticism, Romero’s strategic prowess and relentless work ethic secured his victory. Following Jaron Ennis’ move to the super welterweight division, Romero was elevated to full champion status.

Since then, Garcia has bounced back, securing a world title by defeating Mario Barrios. However, this victory did not impress Romero, who took to social media to accuse Garcia of avoiding a rematch. Romero’s scathing remarks on his X account painted Garcia as a coward, claiming that Garcia backed out of their rematch despite all arrangements being finalized. Romero accused Garcia of opting for an easier fight against a weight-drained Barrios, labeling Garcia’s choices as fear-driven.

The welterweight division is brimming with potential for thrilling bouts and unification fights. Lewis Crocker, the current IBF title holder, has been on a roll with two impressive wins against Paddy Donovan. Although a hand injury postponed his planned fight against Liam Paro, Crocker remains a formidable force. Meanwhile, Ryan Garcia’s victory over Barrios earned him the WBC belt, and Devin Haney holds the WBO title after a stellar performance against Brian Norman Jr.

Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential rematch between Garcia and Haney, but the immediate future seems to point towards Romero facing Shakhram Giyasov. However, a unification bout between Haney and Romero is not out of the question. When asked about facing Haney, Romero confidently stated, “He likes to sue people when he loses. But I’d knock him out cold. Let’s make it happen.”

Adding to the drama, Ryan Garcia has set his sights on Shakur Stevenson, expressing his desire to fight the WBO and The Ring super lightweight champion on Stevenson’s turf. Garcia’s recent victory over Barrios has fueled his ambition, although moving back to the super lightweight division poses challenges. Garcia’s history with weight management, including a notable miss in his fight with Haney, adds a layer of intrigue to his potential matchup with Stevenson.

Garcia’s determination to make the 140-pound limit without a rehydration clause shows his commitment to securing this high-profile fight. Despite past struggles, Garcia is confident in his ability to meet the weight requirements and face Stevenson in what promises to be a blockbuster bout.

The welterweight division is heating up, with rivalries and potential matchups capturing the imagination of boxing fans worldwide. As the drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the road ahead is filled with excitement and anticipation.
