In a surprising turn of events, David Benavidez’s quest to etch his name in boxing history as a three-weight world champion has encountered a significant obstacle. The charismatic fighter, a fan favorite, has successfully defended his WBC light-heavyweight title only once. However, he is set to ascend to the cruiserweight division on May 2 in Las Vegas, where he will challenge Gilberto Ramirez for the WBA and WBO belts. Benavidez’s plan to subsequently return to his original weight class has hit a snag due to a recent WBC ruling.

The WBC’s decision could potentially derail Benavidez’s ambitions, adding a layer of uncertainty to his future in the sport. This development has sent ripples through the boxing community, with fans and analysts alike eagerly awaiting further clarification from the WBC.

Meanwhile, in other boxing news, Jai Opetaia, the IBF cruiserweight champion, is preparing for his Zuffa debut against Brandon Glanton. The IBF has stated that Opetaia risks being stripped of his title if he proceeds with the fight, leaving the Zuffa cruiserweight belt as the sole title at stake unless the IBF reverses its stance. Opetaia, an Australian southpaw with an impressive record of 29 wins and no losses, is known for his knockout power. His opponent, Brandon Glanton, an American fighter with a longer reach, brings a formidable record of his own, with 18 stoppages in 24 fights.

In the heavyweight division, Lawrence Okolie has made a bold prediction, envisioning a future showdown with Daniel Dubois in a heavyweight world title unification bout. Okolie believes that Oleksandr Usyk may be stripped of the WBC title later this year, paving the way for him to challenge Agit Kabayel for the full world championship. However, Okolie’s immediate focus is on his upcoming fight against Tony Yoka in Paris in April. He also tips Dubois to emerge victorious in his clash with Fabio Wardley, setting the stage for a potential heavyweight championship bout between the two former gym mates.

These developments underscore the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the boxing world, where the fortunes of fighters can change in an instant. As the sport continues to evolve, fans can expect more thrilling matchups and surprising twists in the pursuit of boxing glory.
