Gary Cully has made it abundantly clear that his interest in facing Pierce O’Leary is far from mere talk. The Irish boxer, known as ‘The Diva,’ reiterated his desire for an all-Irish clash following their respective bouts on a recent Queensberry card in Dublin. Cully, hailing from Kildare, is setting his sights on a high-stakes collision course with his compatriot.
After securing a victory at the 3Arena, Cully openly discussed the prospect of squaring off against O’Leary, the current European champion and IBO title holder. “A fight between me and Pierce in this arena for the IBO title would be an instant sell-out, even without an undercard,” Cully stated. “I’m looking at that fight as a serious possibility, perhaps one or two fights down the line.”
The Unit 3 fighter, who recently returned from a lengthy hiatus with a decisive win, has more than just O’Leary in his crosshairs. The former Irish lightweight champion is eager to take on any notable opponents in his weight class. “I’m aiming for all the big fights and big names at this weight—definitely,” Cully asserted.
At 30 years old, Cully is acutely aware of the ticking clock and is determined to make the most of his remaining time in the sport. “I’ve got five good years left in boxing, and I’m looking for the biggest fights and the biggest nights,” he declared.
Interestingly, Cully shared the card with Maxi Hughes, the boxer who handed him a defeat before his recent comeback victory. While Cully might have sought revenge if Hughes had managed to upset O’Leary, he harbors no ill will toward the British fighter. “It’s boxing at the end of the day; he beat me. I have full respect for him,” Cully said. “We actually had a cup of tea this morning; there’s great respect there. You fight 10 times, it could be five each. It’s one of those things.”
Cully acknowledged that while he was ready to call out Hughes initially, the British boxer was more prepared when they finally met in the ring. “I’m well able to take my licks; he stepped up and beat me,” Cully admitted. “But that’s all in the past now, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
With his sights set on the biggest challenges and the most prestigious titles, Gary Cully is poised to make a significant impact in the boxing world. His potential showdown with Pierce O’Leary is just one of the many exciting possibilities on the horizon for this determined Irish fighter.
