The anticipation for the WNBA draft is reaching a fever pitch, with speculation rife about who will secure the coveted number one pick. This year’s draft class is brimming with talent, and four names have consistently risen to the top: Lauren Betts, Awa Fam, Azzi Fudd, and Olivia Miles. Each of these athletes brings a unique set of skills and accomplishments to the table, making the decision anything but straightforward.

Lauren Betts, the formidable center from UCLA, has been a dominant force in college basketball. Her impressive physical presence and skilled playmaking have made her a standout candidate. Betts’ ability to control the paint and her consistent performance have analysts predicting a bright future in the WNBA.

Awa Fam, the Spanish center, has also garnered significant attention. Her international experience and versatility on the court make her a valuable asset. Fam’s ability to play both ends of the floor with equal prowess has scouts excited about her potential impact in the league.

Azzi Fudd, the guard from UConn, is another top contender. Known for her exceptional shooting range and offensive skills, Fudd has been a key player for her team. Her ability to score from anywhere on the court and her clutch performances have solidified her reputation as a top-tier prospect.

Olivia Miles, the guard from TCU, has recently surged in the rankings. Her dynamic playmaking and leadership on the court have been instrumental in her team’s success. Miles’ ability to elevate her game in critical moments has not gone unnoticed, making her a strong candidate for the top spot.

Adding to the intrigue of this year’s draft is the impact of transfers. Six of the 15 players projected as first-round picks have played for their current schools only during their senior seasons. This includes notable names like Ta’Niya Latson and Madina Okot of South Carolina, Marta Suarez of TCU, Gianna Kneepkens of UCLA, and Cotie McMahon of Ole Miss. Their performances in their final collegiate seasons have significantly boosted their draft stock, adding another layer of complexity to the selection process.

Last year’s draft saw 15 of the 26 players selected in the second and third rounds making it to the WNBA season, with only five competing in at least 30 games. This highlights the competitive nature of the league and the importance of making strategic picks. Additionally, three first-round selections did not play in the 2025 WNBA season, underscoring the unpredictability and challenges that come with transitioning to the professional level.

As the draft approaches, the excitement and speculation continue to build. The decision on who will go number one is far from clear-cut, with each of the top contenders bringing unique strengths and potential to the table. The impact of transfers and the lessons from last year’s draft only add to the complexity and intrigue of this year’s selection process.
