In anticipation of his upcoming bout with Zurdo Ramirez, David Benavidez is already planning his future in the boxing world. The highly anticipated match for Ramirez’s unified WBO and WBA cruiserweight world titles is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas next Saturday. Benavidez, known as ‘The Mexican Monster,’ is moving up from light heavyweight, where he currently holds the WBC crown, with the aim of becoming a three-division world champion.
Despite the challenge of an undisputed 175-pound title clash with Dmitry Bivol eluding him so far, the unbeaten 29-year-old is determined to return to the light heavyweight division after facing Ramirez. His goal is to entice Bivol into a fight. “My plan wasn’t just to abandon the light heavyweight division,” Benavidez stated on a recent show. “My plan was to come up, grab two titles, come back down and make this fight with me and Bivol even bigger. My dream is to become a unified champion. It’s smart for me to come back down.”
Bivol, who holds the remaining IBF, WBA, and WBO belts, is scheduled to defend his IBF title against mandatory challenger Michael Eifert on May 30 in Russia. The 35-year-old secured the undisputed crown with a revenge win over Artur Beterbiev in his last outing in February. Bivol relinquished the WBC belt that Benavidez now owns in pursuit of a third meeting with Beterbiev, which ultimately did not materialize.
Benavidez, who stopped Anthony Yarde in Riyadh last November, is also eager to secure a showdown with former undisputed light heavyweight titlist Beterbiev, who hasn’t fought since his sole professional defeat to Bivol. “After that fight [against Bivol] when I capture the titles, I’m going to fight Beterbiev,” Benavidez added. “The one that gets me the most excited is probably Beterbiev. It’s two monsters on a collision course. Beterbiev has been the boogeyman for a long, long time. So me being the monster, I’ve got to go in there and take the boogeyman out.”
With his sights set on future challenges, Benavidez is poised to make a significant impact in the boxing world. His determination and ambition are clear as he prepares for his upcoming bout and looks ahead to potential clashes with Bivol and Beterbiev.
