A Historic Rematch: Joe Louis vs Buddy Baer in the Shadow of War

In the early days of 1942, with the nation still reeling from the recent attack on Pearl Harbor, America found itself thrust into the throes of war. Amidst the uncertainty and turmoil, one constant remained: Joe Louis, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Since claiming the title in 1937, ‘The Brown Bomber’ had established himself as the most dominant force in heavyweight boxing since the legendary Jack Dempsey. His superiority was such that viable challengers were scarce. Yet, Louis had a score to settle with Buddy Baer, the younger sibling of former champion Max Baer. Standing at an imposing 6’7″ and weighing over 240 pounds, Baer was a formidable presence in the ring.

The lack of formidable opponents was not a new issue for Louis. By 1939, it was clear that there were no serious threats to his reign. In December 1940, Louis’ promoter, Mike Jacobs, announced a series of seven monthly title bouts, culminating in a showdown with light-heavyweight champion Billy Conn. This series became known as ‘The Bum of the Month Club,’ with Louis systematically dispatching one overmatched opponent after another. Buddy Baer was slated to be the final ‘bum’ of this tour, but their first encounter in May proved otherwise.

Baer, with his significant height and reach advantages, and a 36-pound weight advantage, posed a unique challenge. Although Louis was the superior boxer and harder puncher, he struggled to land effective blows on Baer. The challenger’s aggressive style forced Louis to retreat, and in the first round, Baer stunned the crowd by knocking Louis out of the ring with a swift right followed by a powerful left hook. Louis quickly recovered and appeared unhurt, but Baer continued to press the action.

The subsequent rounds were a fierce battle, with Louis demonstrating his power and accuracy, while Baer relentlessly pressed forward with heavy right hands. The crowd was delighted as Baer found success, backing Louis to the ropes in the third round and forcing him to hold in the fourth. By this time, Louis had noticeable swelling around his left eye.

The fifth round saw both men exchange damaging punches, but in the sixth, Louis asserted his dominance, flooring Baer twice with devastating right hands. As Baer struggled to his feet after the second knockdown, the bell rang. However, amidst the crowd’s noise, Louis did not hear the bell and landed another right hand, knocking Baer down for a third time. Baer, clearly finished, was dragged back to his corner, marking a dramatic turn in the fight.
