Anthony Joshua’s Narrow Escape: A Fateful Seat Swap Saves His Life in Tragic Nigeria Crash
In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the boxing world in shock, Anthony Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight champion, narrowly escaped death in a horrific car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29. The accident, which claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends and trainers, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, has brought to light the fragile nature of life and the thin line between survival and tragedy.
The 36-year-old British boxer was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck. Joshua, who had just made a triumphant return to the ring with a sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, was seated in the back of the vehicle. According to reports, a fateful seat swap at the beginning of the journey played a crucial role in saving his life.
Olalekan Abiodun, the lawyer representing the driver of the SUV, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, revealed that Joshua was initially seated in the front passenger seat. However, due to Joshua’s imposing stature, the driver asked him to move to the back seat behind the driver to improve visibility through the wing mirror. This seemingly innocuous request turned out to be a life-saving decision, as the impact of the crash occurred on the right-hand side of the SUV, where Ayodele and Ghami were seated.
The driver, Kayode, is facing multiple charges, including driving without a valid license, death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without due care. The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the crash occurred when the speeding SUV lost control during an overtaking maneuver, resulting in a burst tire and the subsequent collision with the stationary truck.
Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, spent two days recovering in the hospital. He was visibly distressed and in pain as he was helped out of the wrecked vehicle. The boxing community has rallied around Joshua, with tributes pouring in for Ayodele and Ghami. Most Valuable Promotions, the promotional company behind Jake Paul, paid their respects by emblazoning the names of the deceased on the ring canvas during their show in Puerto Rico.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. As Anthony Joshua continues his recovery, the boxing world mourns the loss of two individuals who were not only his friends but also integral parts of his team. Their memories will undoubtedly live on, inspiring Joshua as he moves forward in his career and personal life.
