In a significant development, a Nevada judge has ruled in favor of Golden Boy Promotions in their legal dispute with rising boxing star Vergil Ortiz Jr. The decision, handed down by Nevada District Judge Cristina Silva, grants the promotion’s motion to compel arbitration, effectively halting any negotiations or contracts with third parties until the arbitration process is complete.
The legal tussle began earlier this year when Ortiz’s team filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, alleging breach of contract and interference with economic advantage. The crux of the matter revolves around the interpretation of Ortiz’s contract with the promotion, which his team argues expired at the end of last year with Golden Boy’s output deal with DAZN.
Judge Silva’s ruling, however, did not side with Ortiz’s arguments. “While Ortiz attempts to argue application of agency principles, this argument requires that I find Golden Boy’s decision to sue Mirigian as constituting waiver,” Silva stated. “But Ortiz fails to meaningfully analyze how those principles apply here.” She further noted that Ortiz’s team did not provide sufficient support for their position that Golden Boy’s actions waived their right to invoke arbitration.
The ruling also addressed Golden Boy’s request for interim injunctive relief, which was granted. This means Ortiz and his manager, Rick Mirigian, are prohibited from engaging with other promotions for future fights until the arbitration process concludes. “The totality of Golden Boy’s actions does not indicate that it waived its right to arbitration,” Silva added. “Rather, its actions are consistent with its right to enforce the arbitration provision of the Agreement.”
This legal battle has put a temporary halt to Ortiz’s potential match against Jaron Ennis, which was being discussed by Ortiz, Matchroom Boxing, and DAZN. The focus now shifts to the arbitration process, which will determine the future of Ortiz’s career and his contractual obligations.
In a related development, Ortiz’s team had filed an emergency motion just hours before the ruling, arguing that a temporary restraining order obtained by Golden Boy Promotions on February 13 had expired. Judge Silva addressed this in her ruling, stating, “It is further ordered that Golden Boy’s motion to dismiss is denied. It is further ordered that Ortiz’s emergency motion is granted in part and denied in part as set forth in this order.”
The boxing world will be watching closely as this high-stakes legal drama unfolds, with significant implications for both Ortiz’s career and the broader landscape of the sport.
