In a bid to reignite an old flame, British lightweight Archie Sharp is eyeing a revival of his once-heated rivalry with Shakur Stevenson as he prepares to step back into the ring. Sharp is set to grace the undercard of the highly-anticipated bout between Adam Azim and Gustavo Lemos at the iconic Copper Box Arena next Saturday. Coincidentally, this comes just hours before Stevenson is slated to challenge Teofimo Lopez for the WBO super lightweight world title across the pond in New York.
The two fighters were previously on a collision course when Stevenson held the WBO super featherweight title and Sharp was the top contender. However, the British boxer’s career took a detour following consecutive losses to Ryan Garner and Maxi Hughes. Now, at 30, Sharp has moved up to lightweight, a division where Stevenson currently holds the WBC title. Sharp, known as ‘Sharpshooter’, is determined to claw his way back into contention.
“Obviously, Shakur Stevenson’s future at 135 is uncertain,” Sharp shared in a recent interview. “We had a bit of a back-and-forth in the past. I’d like to rekindle that rivalry. But first, I need to rediscover my best form and get back to the top.”
Sharp’s immediate focus is on his upcoming fight against Angelo Dragone. The Kent native has joined forces with renowned trainer Mark Tibbs, whom he believes can help him unlock his full potential. “I’ve known Mark for a long time, and it’s great to be working with him,” Sharp said. “He’s bringing out aspects of my boxing that I’d forgotten. I’ve been boxing since I was 7, and they’re seeing things that can make me the best version of myself.”
Sharp’s journey back to the top promises to be an exciting one. With his sights set on Stevenson and a renewed sense of purpose, the British lightweight is ready to make a statement in the ring. As he continues to hone his skills under Tibbs’ guidance, the boxing world waits with bated breath to see if Sharp can indeed revive his career and reignite his rivalry with Stevenson.
