In a surprising turn of events, Conor Benn has announced his first opponent since his departure from Eddie Hearn’s promotional company, marking a significant shift in his career. Benn, known as ‘The Destroyer,’ has signed a lucrative one-fight deal worth $15 million with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, leaving behind a decade-long association with Hearn’s Matchroom. This move has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, signaling a bold new direction for the British welterweight.

Benn is set to return to the ring on April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, not as the headliner of Zuffa’s inaugural UK show as initially expected, but as part of the undercard for the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov bout. His opponent will be none other than former two-time super lightweight world champion, Regis Prograis. This matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter, as both fighters bring a wealth of experience and skill to the ring.

After his last two bouts against Chris Eubank Jr. at middleweight, Benn is expected to return to his natural welterweight division for this clash with Prograis. The 29-year-old has expressed his excitement and determination, stating, “April 11th can’t come soon enough. Returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium again, where I made history against Eubank Jr., means everything to me. My last fight there showed the world exactly who I am and what I’m about.”

Benn’s confidence is palpable as he prepares to face Prograis. “Fighting on the biggest stages, in the biggest shows, I fear no one!” he declared. “I’m fully locked in and ready to deliver another statement performance.” His words echo the sentiment of a fighter ready to prove himself once again on the grand stage.

The British star’s journey has not been without controversy. Benn tested positive for the banned substance Clomiphene, which led to the postponement of a scheduled meeting with Eubank Jr. in October 2022. Despite this setback, Benn was later cleared by the National Anti-Doping Panel and went on to secure a victory over Eubank Jr. in a rematch, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Eddie Hearn, who promoted Benn from his professional debut, has expressed his disappointment and surprise at Benn’s decision to leave Matchroom. Hearn revealed that he had supported Benn through thick and thin, including legal fees and the fallout from the failed drug tests. “Me personally, I’m pretty devastated,” Hearn admitted. “I blame myself, because I forgot it was boxing. I just felt that the loyalty we’ve shown would never ever put us in this position.”

As Benn prepares to face Regis Prograis, the boxing world watches with bated breath. This fight represents not just a battle between two skilled fighters, but a pivotal moment in Benn’s career as he embarks on a new chapter with Zuffa Boxing. The stage is set for an unforgettable night of boxing, and Benn is ready to make his mark once again.
