The cruiserweight division is buzzing with anticipation as the World Boxing Council (WBC) has expressed its support for a unification bout between Jai Opetaia and Noel Mikaelian. This potential clash has cleared a significant hurdle, paving the way for an exciting showdown in the near future.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has given his backing to this cruiserweight unification bout, which could see Opetaia and Mikaelian vie for supremacy in the division. Mikaelian, the current WBC belt-holder, has already shared the ring with Opetaia at the inaugural Zuffa Boxing event, adding a layer of familiarity and intrigue to this potential matchup.

Meanwhile, in the heavyweight division, Agit Kabayel’s retention of his WBC interim title belt sets him on a collision course with full world champion Oleksandr Usyk. However, Usyk will first have the opportunity to make a voluntary defense of his WBC title, which he holds alongside the IBF and WBA belts. The WBC has also approved a rematch, leading to the creation of an interim championship for Kabayel, ensuring that Usyk has the chance to face a top-tier challenger.

In other news, the boxing world is witnessing a significant shift with the entry of Zuffa Boxing into the fray. The UFC’s foray into boxing has been marked by high-profile signings and rapid event organization. With Dana White at the helm, Zuffa Boxing is making waves, and their interest in signing heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk underscores their ambition.

The first two Zuffa Boxing events have already taken place, and the UFC’s platforms, including their website and YouTube channels, are now prominently featuring boxing content. This move signals a new era in combat sports, with Zuffa Boxing poised to make a substantial impact.

Looking ahead, Zuffa Boxing has set its sights on organizing a monumental clash between former heavyweight world champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in 2026. Fury’s last outing was against Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and a potential bout with Joshua would undoubtedly be a blockbuster event.

As the boxing landscape continues to evolve, fans can look forward to a thrilling period ahead, with unification bouts, high-stakes defenses, and the emergence of new promotional powerhouses like Zuffa Boxing. The stage is set for an exciting chapter in the sport’s history.
