In a surprising turn of events, heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois has decided to reunite with his former trainer, Don Charles. The duo had previously parted ways after a series of fights, including a notable loss to Oleksandr Usyk in July. This decision marks a significant shift in Dubois’ career trajectory as he aims to reclaim his former glory.
Dubois and Charles had a successful run together, culminating in Dubois winning the IBF heavyweight world title. Their partnership also saw Dubois secure a monumental victory against Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in 2024. However, their collaboration came to an abrupt end following the defeat to Usyk, with Charles suggesting that Dubois’ father, Stan, played a pivotal role in the decision to part ways.
Charles expressed his feelings about the separation, stating, “I can categorically say Daniel’s not capable of making that decision. That was made for him, and he was the one who had to action it—deliver it because he is the fighter. You should never let the devil come between us. Unfortunately, they’ve managed to use their ways to get at you, and then you had to do what you did. But I feel very let down. I feel very sad, but it will never change what we achieved together.”
After leaving Charles, Dubois briefly trained under Tony Sims at the Matchroom gym. However, this partnership was short-lived, as Dubois has now decided to return to Charles without having fought under Sims’ guidance. Riz Khan of Inspire Capital Sports, which manages Dubois, confirmed the reunion, stating, “On behalf of Team Dubois, I wish to confirm to the media and all relevant parties that Daniel has decided to resume his professional relationship with Don Charles and his coaching team.”
Khan further elaborated, “Don Charles and his team guided Daniel to world champion status and oversaw the most successful period of his career. Following the defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel took time to reflect on his journey and the emotions surrounding the decision to part ways with Don. After careful consideration and discussions with the wider team, Daniel has chosen to reverse that decision. Daniel will now return to working with Don Charles, under whose corner he achieved his greatest accomplishments to date.”
Tony Sims, who briefly trained Dubois, acknowledged the change, stating, “I guess me and Daniel just didn’t gel. So I think it’s a good move for him to go back to Don. Sometimes a certain coach is made for a certain fighter.”
As Dubois returns to his former trainer, the boxing world eagerly awaits further announcements regarding his future fights. This reunion could potentially mark the beginning of a new chapter in Dubois’ career, as he seeks to build on his past successes and overcome recent setbacks.
