In the realm of Irish boxing, few narratives are as compelling as that of Gary ‘The Diva’ Cully. The Kildare native is poised to make his long-awaited return to the ring this St. Patrick’s Week, marking his first bout in 15 months. Cully’s journey has been one of resilience and determination, and his upcoming fight at the 3Arena is a testament to his unwavering spirit.

Cully’s last appearance in the ring ended in a unanimous decision defeat to Maxi Hughes, a setback that was compounded by an eye injury. However, the southpaw stylist has fully recovered and is now setting his sights on a path back to world-level competition. His ultimate goal? A world title, and preferably against a familiar face: Pierce O’Leary.

‘Obviously, Pierce is from Dublin, from Ireland. I’m rooting for him in his fight against Mark Chamberlain,’ Cully stated. ‘But, yeah, I reckon a big Irish showdown would sell out, and it would be no problem for a world title one day. That’s where I’m aiming to be.’

Cully’s confidence is not misplaced. With over 20 years in the sport, he has honed his skills and proven his mettle at high levels. His upcoming fight is just the first step in his journey back to the top. ‘I know what level I can operate at,’ Cully asserted. ‘I’ve been operating at a high level for the last 20 years. So I know what level I’m capable of getting to. And this is just the first step of getting back there.’

There is also a strong element of redemption in Cully’s narrative. The 29-year-old admits that his confidence was shaken after a surprise defeat to Mexican puncher Jose Felix. However, he has since put that loss behind him and is ready to showcase his true capabilities once again. ‘I need to go up and redeem myself and put in a good performance,’ Cully said. ‘I feel like I haven’t really performed since the Felix fight… he beat me, and that loss took a lot of confidence out of me… since the fight, I wasn’t really performing or enjoying what I’ve been doing. It took a good while to get over it.’

As Cully steps back into the ring, the boxing world will be watching closely. His journey is not just about reclaiming his former glory but also about setting the stage for a potential all-Irish showdown that could captivate the nation. With his sights set on a world title, Cully’s story is far from over. In fact, it may just be entering its most exciting chapter.
