George Groves Warns Against Underestimating Fabio Wardley in Potential Fury Showdown

As the boxing world eagerly anticipates Tyson Fury’s return to the ring later this year, the heavyweight champion has named Fabio Wardley as a potential opponent. George Groves, a seasoned boxing analyst, has shared his insights on this intriguing matchup, cautioning against underestimating Wardley’s chances against ‘The Gypsy King’.

Fury, who has been absent from the boxing scene since his defeat in December 2024, is gearing up for a comeback in 2026. His last bout marked the second loss of his professional career, both at the hands of two-time undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Following these setbacks, Fury had announced his retirement, only to reverse his decision recently, hinting at several potential opponents for his return, including the newly minted WBO world champion, Fabio Wardley.

Groves, in a recent interview, discussed the potential clash between Fury and Wardley. “One might assume Fury would easily overcome Wardley due to his prowess in neutralizing opponents’ strengths,” Groves remarked. “However, Wardley, despite his limited skillset, is a formidable fighter.”

Wardley’s journey to the top has been unconventional. Unlike most boxers, he did not compete in the amateur ranks. Instead, he participated in unlicensed bouts before turning professional in 2017. Since then, his career has been on an upward trajectory, marked by significant victories this year.

In June, Wardley delivered a stunning knockout to Justis Huni at his boyhood football club, Ipswich Town’s home ground. He followed this up with an impressive performance against former WBO world champion Joseph Parker, stopping him in the 11th round. With Usyk vacating the WBO title, Wardley was elevated to full world champion status.

Groves highlighted the factors that could make Wardley a formidable opponent for Fury. “Wardley may lack the traditional boxing pedigree, but his fitness, strength, and determination are unquestionable,” Groves stated. “If Fury is not in top shape, this fight could be more challenging than anticipated. It would be a mistake to write Wardley off.”

The potential showdown between Fury and Wardley promises to be an exciting contest, with both fighters bringing unique strengths to the ring. As the boxing community awaits Fury’s return, all eyes will be on Wardley to see if he can defy the odds and make his mark against one of the sport’s most charismatic figures.
