In a disappointing turn of events for boxing enthusiasts, Irish welterweight sensation Paddy ‘The Real Deal’ Donovan (14-2, 11 KOs) has been forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated IBF World Welterweight Title Eliminator against Australia’s Liam Paro (26-1, 16 KOs), scheduled for January 16th. A severe illness has sidelined Donovan, preventing him from training and sparring for over three weeks, leading to this unfortunate decision.
The victor of this 12-round bout was set to become the mandatory challenger for IBF Welterweight World Champion Lewis ‘The Croc’ Crocker (22-0, 11 KOs). Donovan, who has previously engaged in two fiercely contested battles with Crocker in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been left heartbroken by this setback. Despite winning 18 of 20 rounds against Crocker in their past encounters, fate has once again dealt Donovan a cruel hand.
‘I’m utterly devastated to have to pull out of this fight,’ Donovan expressed. ‘I was fully prepared and confident in my ability to defeat Paro. However, missing three weeks of training due to illness left me with no choice. I sincerely apologize to all the fans in Australia who were eagerly awaiting this match. Rest assured, I will return stronger than ever in 2026. I wish Paro all the best and hope our paths cross in the ring in the future.’
Andy Lee, Donovan’s coach and co-manager alongside NYC-based attorney Keith Sullivan, echoed these sentiments. ‘If we don’t learn from our past mistakes, we are bound to repeat them,’ Lee stated. ‘I’ve seen this situation unfold before with other boxers, and it never ends well. There was no way Paddy could train and fight effectively with the viral chest and respiratory infection he had. I made the call to withdraw him from the fight for his own good. Paddy remains one of the top welterweights globally, with a promising future ahead in the sport.’
Donovan is expected to resume training shortly and aims to be back in the ring by late March. This setback, while disappointing, is merely a temporary hurdle in what promises to be a long and successful career for the Irish fighter.
Meanwhile, the boxing world continues to buzz with activity. January has already seen several high-profile bouts, including Reina Tellez’s featherweight title fights in Puerto Rico, Dalton Smith’s WBC super lightweight title match in Germany, and upcoming events in California, Denmark, and London featuring top contenders like Abass Baraou and Shakur Stevenson.
In other news, British boxer Conor Benn has challenged WBA world welterweight champion Rolando Romero for a bout in 2026, adding another exciting potential matchup to the calendar. Additionally, former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has announced his return from retirement, setting the stage for more thrilling action in the ring.
