In the ever-evolving landscape of heavyweight boxing, the potential clash between the seasoned Oleksandr Usyk and the rising star Moses Itauma has sparked considerable debate. Former cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson recently shared his insights on this intriguing matchup, offering a unique perspective on the high-stakes bout.

At just 21 years old, Itauma has rapidly ascended the ranks of the heavyweight division, capturing the attention of boxing enthusiasts worldwide. Since his professional debut in 2021, Itauma has demonstrated remarkable skill and power, securing an impressive record of 13-0 with 11 victories by stoppage. His most notable triumph came in August, where he dispatched Dillian Whyte in the opening round, showcasing his devastating potential.

Nelson, however, believes that while Itauma’s talent is undeniable, he is not yet ready to face a veteran like Usyk. “He’s nowhere near the finished article,” Nelson remarked. “He’s only 21 years old, and I think we’ve seen maybe 35% of him.” Despite Itauma’s meteoric rise, Nelson cautions that Usyk’s experience and ring IQ could prove to be decisive factors in the bout.

Itauma’s journey to the top has been nothing short of spectacular. He has faced and conquered formidable opponents, including a first-round knockout of Dempsey McKean on the undercard of the Usyk vs. Tyson Fury fight. His victory over Whyte further solidified his position as a formidable contender, earning him the WBA’s number one ranking for Usyk’s world title.

The prospect of a Usyk vs. Itauma fight has generated significant buzz, with Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, expressing his enthusiasm for the matchup on social media. “I want to see Usyk against Itauma. This is the fight,” Alalshikh stated, underscoring the anticipation surrounding this potential showdown.

Nelson acknowledges the excitement but remains pragmatic about the outcome. “I think Moses gives him hellfire, but I think Usyk is too clever for him,” Nelson asserted. “I think he’s too clever for all of them, but it’s a dangerous fight for him. I would expect Usyk to beat him, but don’t write this boy off.”

As the boxing world eagerly awaits this potential clash, Itauma is set to return to the ring later this year. His comeback fight, initially scheduled for this week, was postponed due to a torn bicep sustained during training. The rescheduled event is now set for March 28, where Itauma will face American heavyweight Jermaine Franklin, aiming for a statement win after a seven-month hiatus.

In 2025, Itauma’s combined ring time in his two victories against Mike Balogun and Dillian Whyte amounted to just over five minutes, a testament to his knockout power and efficiency. As the young heavyweight continues to hone his skills, the boxing community watches with bated breath, anticipating the next chapter in his promising career.
