In a night that will be etched into the annals of Irish boxing history, Kelsey Leonard delivered a performance that was as stylish as it was significant. The Unit 3 fighter didn’t just win; she made a statement, defeating Elaine Harrison in the first-ever all-Irish female professional fight. The victory was a testament to Leonard’s skill and determination, marking a pivotal moment for women’s boxing in Ireland.

Leonard’s triumph was not merely about the win, but the manner in which it was achieved. “I wasn’t looking for the stoppage, and I was just happy with the win, but being able to get that is 10 times better,” Leonard shared after the fight. Her humility and focus on the victory itself underscored the magnitude of the event. The Kildare boxer, trained by Niall Barrett, showcased a career-best performance that left no doubt about her prowess in the ring.

The fight was not without its challenges. Leonard described it as “a bit of a scrappier fight,” marked by a head clash and a few war wounds. However, these battle scars were a testament to the intensity and significance of the contest. “It’s all worth it to get the win,” Leonard affirmed, highlighting her resilience and determination.

Leonard’s victory was not just a personal achievement but a historic milestone for Irish women’s boxing. She knew that Harrison would be a formidable opponent, inspired by the occasion and the spotlight. “I knew she was going to be my toughest opponent… it was a special night and she was really going to come to win. I think that brought out the best in me as well,” Leonard said. Her strategic approach and patience were crucial in securing the win.

The body attack that ultimately led to the stoppage was a key part of Leonard’s game plan. “It was definitely in the game plan… start off with jabs, picking my shots, and then work my way down to the body,” she revealed. This tactical execution demonstrated Leonard’s maturity and strategic thinking in the ring.

Looking ahead, Leonard is already setting her sights on another defining night for Irish boxing. She envisions an all-female card, a celebration of women’s boxing that could inspire future generations. “Everybody’s going to be looking to get on that card… for Katie [Taylor] it would be special for a lot of women to be on it,” Leonard said. Her vision for an all-female card is a bold statement, reflecting her ambition and commitment to the sport.

Kelsey Leonard’s historic triumph is more than just a victory; it’s a landmark moment that could herald a new era for women’s boxing in Ireland. Her performance, marked by skill, strategy, and resilience, sets a high bar for future fighters and paves the way for more historic nights in the ring.
