In a recent turn of events, the highly anticipated rematch between boxing legends Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather has hit a snag. The two pugilists are at odds over the nature of their upcoming bout, with Pacquiao insisting on a sanctioned professional fight, while Mayweather seems to be leaning towards an exhibition match.

Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in the history of boxing, has made it clear that he is not interested in anything less than a full-fledged, sanctioned bout. His team, led by Manny Pacquiao Promotions CEO Jas Mathur, has denied Mayweather’s claims that the fight would be an exhibition. According to Mathur, Mayweather has already signed a contract for a professional fight and has received an advance for the same.

On the other hand, Mayweather, who has an unblemished professional record of 50 wins (27 by knockout) and no losses, has stated that the upcoming fight with Pacquiao would not be a sanctioned bout. In a recent conversation with Vegas Sports Today, Mayweather said, “As of right now, we don’t know exactly where the fight is going to be at, but this is not actually a fight, it’s an exhibition.”

This statement from Mayweather contradicts the earlier announcement by Netflix, which had stated that the fight between the two boxers would take place on September 19. The first encounter between Mayweather and Pacquiao, dubbed the ‘Fight of the Century,’ took place over a decade ago, with Mayweather claiming a unanimous points win to retain his WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight world titles.

Mayweather’s last professional fight was against Conor McGregor in August 2017. Since then, he has been involved in a series of exhibition fights. However, the Pacquiao showdown was expected to be his first professional contest since then, until his recent comments cast doubt on that assumption.

Despite the uncertainty, Pacquiao’s team remains optimistic. Mathur stated, “As of right now, the fight is still on. There is no termination of any sort, and he has signed for a professional fight. No one in these last three months has brought up anything related to the venue or related to the fight not being a professional fight.”

The boxing world eagerly awaits further developments, hoping that this clash of expectations will be resolved, and the two legends will once again step into the ring to settle their differences.
