In the ever-evolving landscape of professional boxing, few voices carry as much weight as that of Roy Jones Jr. The former four-weight world champion has recently shared his insights on the potential trajectory of Moses Itauma, a rising star in the heavyweight division. With a professional record boasting 11 stoppage victories in just 13 fights, Itauma has already made a significant impact, notably against seasoned opponents like Mike Balogun, Mariusz Wach, and Dempsey McKean.

Itauma’s most recent bout in August, where he headlined in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, saw him deliver a stunning first-round knockout against Dillian Whyte. This victory has further cemented his reputation as a formidable force in the ring. Jones Jr., speaking with the authority of a seasoned veteran, emphasized the importance of a measured approach to Itauma’s career progression.

“He could be the next dominant force for sure, as long as he doesn’t get moved too fast,” Jones Jr. cautioned. “Sometimes we see guys who just want to throw them out there quickly. It all depends on their background, how they came up and whether they can take that pressure.” This sentiment underscores the delicate balance between nurturing talent and avoiding the pitfalls of premature high-stakes matches.

Over the past decade, the heavyweight division has been dominated by the likes of Oleksandr Usyk, a two-time undisputed champion with notable victories over Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Despite Itauma’s relatively limited experience, his name has already been linked with Usyk’s, hinting at the high expectations placed upon him. Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, has publicly expressed his desire to see a bout between Usyk and Itauma, adding fuel to the speculative fire.

Jones Jr. offered a nuanced perspective on a potential clash between Itauma and Usyk. “It depends on how well this guy understands the pressure, how bad he wants it,” Jones Jr. remarked. “He can do anything he wants to do cause he has all the ability. There is nothing that should stop him becoming world champion unless he’s moved too fast, ’cause if you put him in with Usyk right now it’s too fast.”

Itauma, who recently turned 21, was slated to return to the ring in a highly anticipated match against Jermaine Franklin. However, the fight was postponed due to an injury sustained during training camp. The rescheduled date is set for March 28, and fans eagerly await his return. Despite the setback, Itauma remains a promising figure in the heavyweight division, with the potential to achieve greatness if his career is managed with care and precision.

As the boxing world watches with bated breath, the journey of Moses Itauma promises to be one of excitement and anticipation. With the guidance of experienced voices like Roy Jones Jr., the future looks bright for this young heavyweight contender.
