In a recent development that has sent ripples through the boxing community, Ryan Garcia has been slapped with a $5,000 fine by the World Boxing Council (WBC). The fine comes as a result of Garcia’s failure to meet the 14-day weight deadline ahead of his highly anticipated welterweight title challenge against Mario Barrios at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on February 21, 2026.
The WBC’s regulations require fighters to provide video evidence that they are within five percent of the 147-pound weight limit by the specified deadline. While Barrios complied with the WBC’s requirements, Garcia initially fell short, leading to the imposition of the fine. However, Garcia managed to submit the required proof within a second time window granted by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.
This is not the first time Garcia has faced weight-related issues. In April 2024, he was more than three pounds overweight for his bout against Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Despite knocking down Haney three times during the fight, Garcia had a point deducted for hitting off the break, and the bout was later ruled a No Contest.
Garcia’s recent record has been less than stellar, with only one victory in his last five bouts. His last win came in July 2026 against Javier Fortuna at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The upcoming fight against Barrios represents a crucial opportunity for Garcia to redeem himself and get back on the winning track.
According to an official statement from the WBC, the organization expected to receive Garcia’s weight video by February 15 or 16, 2026, depending on his training schedule. The statement also noted that failure to provide the required video evidence would result in a press statement from the WBC and contact with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Despite the initial hiccup, Garcia successfully met the weight requirements during a second weight check scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2026. Both fighters were required to be no more than three percent above the maximum allowed weight, a condition that Garcia ultimately satisfied.
As the boxing world eagerly awaits the Garcia vs. Barrios showdown, all eyes will be on Garcia to see if he can overcome his recent struggles and deliver a performance worthy of a welterweight title contender.
