In a surprising turn of events, Shakur Stevenson has been relieved of his WBC Lightweight Championship mere days after his impressive victory over Teofimo Lopez. The 28-year-old Newark native had secured the vacant WBC title in November 2023 with a win against Edwin De Los Santos. Despite his triumph, Stevenson’s cautious approach in the ring drew criticism from many spectators.

Stevenson’s recent ascent to the 140-pound division saw him dominate Lopez at Madison Square Garden, clinching the Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles. However, his refusal to pay a $100,000 sanctioning fee to the WBC led to the organization stripping him of his lightweight title. Stevenson expressed his disdain for the fee, questioning the WBC’s motives and their involvement in his fight with Lopez.

On February 1st, in New York, Stevenson’s unanimous decision victory over Lopez marked his 25th professional win, with 11 of those victories coming by way of knockout. Despite this setback, Stevenson’s future seems to lie in the junior welterweight division, where he has already made a significant impact.

Following his victory, Stevenson called out welterweight contender Conor Benn, expressing his desire to face the British fighter. Benn, who was present at the fight, welcomed the challenge. With both fighters eager to prove their mettle, a potential bout between Stevenson and Benn could be on the horizon.

Stevenson’s journey in the sport has been marked by both triumph and controversy. His recent victory over Lopez showcased his skill and determination, but his refusal to pay the WBC’s sanctioning fee has led to this unexpected turn of events. As Stevenson moves forward in his career, his focus will likely shift to the junior welterweight division, where he aims to continue his winning streak and solidify his legacy in the sport.
