In a recent revelation, Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight champion, has expressed his willingness to step into the ring with Tyson Fury for a third time, but with a significant condition attached. Usyk, who has already defeated Fury twice, leading to Fury’s brief retirement after their second bout in December, seems open to the idea of a trilogy, but only if the undisputed status is on the line.

Fury, known as ‘The Gypsy King,’ made a surprising comeback announcement earlier this month. The 37-year-old has been vocal about his desire for a trilogy with Usyk, maintaining that he was the rightful winner of their previous encounters. In an interview back in July, Fury stated, “If I was going to come back, I’d come back for Usyk, but I want a fair result in England.”

Usyk’s journey to becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era was marked by a split decision victory over Fury in May 2024. To secure a rematch with Fury, Usyk relinquished the IBF title, only to reclaim the undisputed crown with a fifth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois in their rematch last July. However, Usyk vacated the WBO title in November, paving the way for Fabio Wardley to be elevated from interim champion to full WBO titlist.

When asked about the possibility of a third bout with Fury, Usyk responded with a simple, “Why not? But only if it’s a fight for the undisputed status again.” This statement underscores Usyk’s determination to maintain the highest stakes in his fights, ensuring that each bout contributes significantly to his legacy.

In parallel, negotiations are ongoing for a potential showdown between Usyk and former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. Wilder, who made 10 successful defenses of the WBC crown before losing it to Fury, has been approved by the WBC to face Usyk in a voluntary title defense. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman praised Wilder’s credentials, stating, “Deontay Wilder was champion for five years of the WBC. He is a tremendous force, he has great punching power. He is ranked by the WBC, so absolutely he is eligible and welcome to fight Usyk in a voluntary title defence.”

As the boxing world eagerly awaits further developments, one thing is clear: Oleksandr Usyk is focused on maintaining his undisputed status, whether it be against Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder. His condition for a third bout with Fury highlights his commitment to the sport’s highest standards and his desire to solidify his place in boxing history.
