In a recent turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has staunchly defended his organization’s decision to strip Shakur Stevenson of his lightweight title. Sulaiman vehemently denies any allegations of hastiness or financial motivation behind the controversial move.

Stevenson, who had previously held the WBC lightweight title and successfully defended it on three occasions, recently made a triumphant move up to the junior welterweight division. His impressive victory over Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden secured him both the *Ring* and WBO junior welterweight titles. However, just days after this career-defining win, the WBC announced its decision to revoke Stevenson’s lightweight title.

The WBC’s decision hinged on Stevenson’s refusal to pay a $100,000 sanctioning fee for his fight with Lopez. Stevenson, never one to mince words, took to social media to express his disdain for the WBC’s actions. He questioned the organization’s integrity and suggested that the WBC was taking out its frustrations with Terence Crawford, whom they had also stripped of a title in December, on him.

In a fiery post on his X account, Stevenson wrote, “100k to some crooks who don’t deserve it? What the hell am I giving y’all 100k right now for? Because y’all got beef with Bud [Crawford]? So come at me for it. The WBC didn’t even have s— to do with this fight, and it’s eating them alive. Take your belt, it don’t make me.”

Despite the controversy, Stevenson’s future in the junior welterweight division seems secure. With an impressive record of 25 wins (11 by KO) and no losses, Stevenson’s career trajectory continues to point upwards. His recent victory over Lopez, a former unified lightweight champion, underscores his prowess and adaptability in the ring.

The WBC’s decision has sparked a debate within the boxing community about the role and influence of sanctioning bodies. While some argue that these organizations play a crucial role in maintaining order and structure within the sport, others see them as impediments that prioritize financial gain over the best interests of the fighters and the sport.

As the dust settles on this controversy, one thing is clear: Shakur Stevenson’s star continues to rise. His talent, determination, and unapologetic authenticity have endeared him to fans worldwide. Regardless of the WBC’s decision, Stevenson’s future in the junior welterweight division looks bright, and boxing enthusiasts eagerly await his next move.
