In an unexpected twist that has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, Oleksandr Usyk is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven on May 23. The bout, scheduled to take place at the iconic Pyramids of Giza, has sparked intense debate and speculation among fight enthusiasts worldwide.

The announcement of this unusual matchup has left many questioning the WBC’s decision to sanction the fight as a title defense, rather than a special event. Initially, the WBC had expressed support for the crossover fight, even commissioning a unique belt inspired by the Pyramids of Egypt. However, the governing body later reversed its stance, officially sanctioning the bout as a voluntary title defense for Usyk.

This change of heart has divided the boxing world, with some critics arguing that the fight undermines the integrity of the sport, while others simply express excitement at the prospect of seeing Usyk back in the ring. The Ukrainian champion, boasting an impressive record of 24-0 with 15 KOs, has not fought since his victory over Anthony Joshua in August 2022.

Tony Bellew, a respected figure in the boxing community, recently shared his insights on the upcoming fight. Bellew acknowledged Verhoeven’s credentials as a kickboxer, noting his extensive sparring experience with the Fury brothers, Tyson and Hughie. However, Bellew remains confident that Usyk’s superior boxing skills will ultimately prevail.

“Verhoeven is a strong guy with good hands for a kickboxer,” Bellew said. “But let’s not forget, this is a boxing match. Usyk is a master of his craft, and I believe he will figure Verhoeven out within a few rounds. By the middle rounds, Usyk will be landing shots that Verhoeven won’t even see coming.”

While Verhoeven’s kickboxing prowess is undeniable, with many considering him one of the best in the sport’s history, the transition to boxing presents a significant challenge. Bellew emphasized that no fighter from another discipline has successfully crossed over to beat a boxing champion at their own game.

As the fight draws nearer, all eyes will be on the Pyramids of Giza, where Usyk and Verhoeven will step into the ring to make history. Regardless of the outcome, this unprecedented showdown promises to be a spectacle that captivates the boxing world and beyond.
