In a bold prediction that has sent ripples through the boxing world, Eddie Hearn, the renowned promoter, has forecasted an early knockout victory for Anthony Joshua against Deontay Wilder. This declaration comes hot on the heels of Wilder’s recent split decision win against Derek Chisora at the iconic O2 Arena.
Joshua, who has been honing his skills in Spain alongside former rival Oleksandr Usyk, made a triumphant return to the ring in December with a knockout victory over Jake Paul. However, his journey has not been without its challenges. Just ten days after his victory, Joshua was involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria that resulted in minor injuries for the boxer but sadly claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
Hearn, who has been instrumental in Joshua’s career, is eyeing a July return for ‘AJ’ and has expressed his willingness to orchestrate a long-awaited showdown between Joshua and Wilder. Hearn’s confidence in Joshua’s prowess is unwavering, as he believes his protg would secure a victory within three rounds.
“We need a warm-up fight before we face Tyson Fury,” Hearn stated. “Given that AJ is recovering from the accident and rehabilitating his body, a bout with Deontay Wilder would serve as an ideal warm-up. Following that, we can set our sights on Tyson Fury in December.”
Hearn acknowledged Wilder’s improved performance in his recent fight but remained steadfast in his belief in Joshua’s abilities. “I have immense respect for Wilder and I think he looked much better in that fight than he has done previously. But let me tell you, Anthony Joshua will walk through Deontay Wilder within three rounds,” Hearn asserted.
The pair have been on a collision course since both held world heavyweight titles back in 2018. Joshua is likely to be ringside at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday for Fury’s return against Arslanbek Makhmudov. Fury, who is making a comeback after retiring last year following a second straight defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, has also expressed his readiness to face Joshua should he overcome Makhmudov.
“I’d like to fight him [Joshua] next for sure,” Fury told The Stomping Ground. “If he’s available next, then we’ll do it next, providing I get through Arslanbek.”
As the boxing world eagerly awaits these potential matchups, one thing is certain: the heavyweight division is heating up, and fans can expect a thrilling year ahead.
