In the annals of boxing history, few rivalries have captivated the world quite like the epic saga between Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Their legendary clash, shrouded in controversy and anticipation, remains etched in the memories of sports enthusiasts. Yet, it is often forgotten that this monumental bout nearly never materialized.

As early as 1981, the prospect of a Hagler vs. Leonard showdown seemed inevitable. Marvelous Marvin Hagler had established his dominance in the middleweight division with resounding victories over Vito Antuofermo and Mustafa Hamsho. Meanwhile, Sugar Ray Leonard had claimed a junior middleweight belt by defeating Ayub Kalule and subsequently triumphed over Thomas Hearns. The stage was set for a historic encounter.

However, fate had other plans. In 1982, following a routine title defense against Bruce Finch, Leonard suffered a detached retina. Despite successful surgery, the injury led to his first retirement from boxing. At a gala ceremony in Baltimore, with Hagler in attendance, Leonard left the crowd in suspense before delivering the heartbreaking news that their dream fight would never come to pass. Hagler and his managers, the Petronelli brothers, were left stunned and disappointed, having anticipated Leonard’s intention to challenge Hagler.

Less than two years later, Leonard made a comeback, expressing his desire to resume his career and eventually face Hagler. However, as he prepared for a bout against Kevin Howard, it was discovered that the retina in his right eye was loose. Another successful surgery followed, but the eye issues had become a significant concern. In the ring against Howard, Leonard was knocked down for the first time in his career. Despite securing a ninth-round TKO victory, he announced his second retirement immediately after the bout.

Reflecting on his retirements, Leonard believes that the issues extended beyond the ring. “My ophthalmologist assured me that the surgery was a success,” Leonard recalls. “But with millions of fans, along with my family and friends, warning me about the risk of blindness, I was torn. Although my doctor said the chance of re-injuring my eye was remote, I didn’t want to be like those boxers who came back one too many times. I wanted to believe that retirement was final.”

Leonard admits that his mental state played a crucial role in his performance. “Against Kevin Howard, I wasn’t mentally prepared,” he confesses. “I thrive when I’m the underdog, when the odds are against me. At my best, I would have beaten Kevin easily.” And so, Leonard stepped away from boxing once again, while Hagler continued his journey, leaving fans to wonder about the epic battle that nearly was.
