In a turn of events that has left the boxing community reeling, Glen Byrne, a rising star in the super welterweight division, has announced his forced retirement from the sport. The 29-year-old fighter, known for his tenacity and skill, has been medically advised to hang up his gloves due to severe injuries sustained in his last bout.

The injury, a bleed on the brain, occurred during a controversial fight where Byrne was initially denied a stoppage win, only to suffer a heavy knockout defeat that landed him in the hospital. Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, Byrne is focusing on the positives, expressing gratitude for his health and the journey he has had in the sport.

Byrne took to social media to share the news, stating, “The journey has come to an end. Not in the way I ever wanted, but unfortunately, after my last fight, I am no longer medically cleared to compete. The damage I suffered resulted in a bleed on my brain, and doctors have advised me not to continue fighting. I’m devastated, to say the least, but I’m also very fortunate that my injuries weren’t worse and that I’m in good health.”

Reflecting on his career, Byrne’s stint in professional boxing was brief but memorable. Coached, managed, and promoted by his brother Jay Byrne under the JB Promotions banner, Glen Byrne made a significant impact in the sport. He fought in prestigious venues such as the 3Arena, SSE Arena, Ulster Hall, Manchester, and the National Stadium, and even co-main evented on a Matchroom card.

“Looking back, I can only be proud of my career—9 fights, 7 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss,” Byrne said. “I got to fight in venues I could only have dreamed of. Fighting live on TV multiple times was incredible, and co-main eventing on a Matchroom card is something I’ll never forget. Boxing started as a hobby for me, but it’s something I always gave 100% to, and I truly believe I earned every opportunity that came my way.”

Byrne also paid tribute to his brother Jay, acknowledging his pivotal role in his career. “A big thank you to Jay, who coached me from day one, believed in me, and helped create those opportunities. The countless hours we put in together, when you look from my debut to my last fight, you can see the improvements and just how good a coach he is.”

The boxing community extends its gratitude to Glen Byrne for the excitement and dedication he brought to the ring. His forced retirement is a stark reminder of the risks and sacrifices inherent in the sport, and his positive outlook serves as an inspiration to all.
