In a recent turn of events, David Benavidez has expressed his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez’s upcoming appearance at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday. Benavidez is convinced that Canelo’s attendance is more about scouting his performance against Zurdo Ramirez than supporting his stablemate, Jaime Munguia.
Canelo Alvarez, who has been accused of avoiding a bout with Benavidez, has consistently distanced himself from a potential clash with the rising star. Alvarez is expected to be present at the arena to support Munguia, who is set to challenge WBA super middleweight world champion, Armando Resendiz. However, Benavidez believes that Canelo’s primary interest lies in observing his cruiserweight debut against Zurdo Ramirez.
“It’s a big event,” the 29-year-old Benavidez told reporters on Wednesday. “You can tell the magnitude of the event because Canelo didn’t even go to Jaime Munguia’s last fight. He’s saying he’s coming for Munguia, but he’s not coming to see Munguia; he’s coming to see me up close and personal. Whether it’s to scout for a next fight, I don’t know, but you see how everything plays itself out. I went to his fights, now he’s coming to my fights. I don’t need to say anything else.”
This marks the first time in six years that Alvarez hasn’t fought on Cinco De Mayo weekend. His return from defeat to Terence Crawford is likely to be on September 12 in Riyadh. The 35-year-old has been sidelined after undergoing elbow surgery.
Benavidez is set to challenge Zurdo for his unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight world titles, with the fight being broadcast live on DAZN and Amazon Prime pay-per-view. Benavidez, known as ‘The Mexican Monster,’ remains the WBC light heavyweight world champion and successfully defended his title for the first time with a seventh-round stoppage over Anthony Yarde in Riyadh last November.
The Arizona native aims to become a three-weight world champion if he defeats Ramirez. However, he has vowed to return to the light heavyweight division afterwards to face Dmitry Bivol in an undisputed title showdown.
“My plan wasn’t just to abandon the light heavyweight division,” Benavidez said on The Ariel Helwani Show. “My plan was to come up, grab two titles, come back down, and make this fight with me and Bivol even bigger. My dream is to become a unified champion. It’s smart for me to come back down.”
As the boxing world eagerly awaits the outcome of the Benavidez vs. Ramirez fight, the speculation surrounding Canelo’s intentions adds an extra layer of intrigue to the event. Will Canelo be scouting his next opponent, or is his presence merely a show of support for his stablemate? Only time will tell.
