Eddie Hearn Explores New Avenues for Conor Benn’s Next Bout

In a recent development, Eddie Hearn, the renowned boxing promoter, has hinted at an intriguing alternative for Conor Benn’s next fight, should the winner of the upcoming Mario Barrios vs. Ryan Garcia clash prove unavailable. The highly anticipated Barrios-Garcia showdown is scheduled for February 21 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Benn positioned as the mandatory challenger for the victor. However, Hearn has suggested that Benn could potentially face WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero instead.

Romero, who previously defeated Garcia in a points victory at Times Square in May, presents an exciting opportunity for Benn. However, there is a significant obstacle to this potential matchup. The WBA has mandated that Romero must face Shakhram Giyasov, an unbeaten Uzbek boxer also promoted by Hearn’s Matchroom. Giyasov has been patiently awaiting his chance and even stepped aside to allow Eimantas Stanionis to unify with Jaron Ennis in April.

“Rolly Romero has to fight Shakhram Giyasov,” Hearn stated. “It’s ordered, there’s no escape. We would have to find a solution for that.” This mandate complicates the possibility of a Benn-Romero fight, but Hearn remains optimistic about finding a resolution.

Benn, who is coming off a career-defining victory over Chris Eubank Jr in November, has expressed his desire to face the winner of the Barrios-Garcia bout. “Listen, I said I would be WBC champion, it was always the dream, so to be within touching distance and be made mandatory for the WBC world title, I’ll be there ringside and I want the winner,” Benn declared. “No doubt it will be Garcia. Garcia vs Benn – I like the sound of that.”

Hearn acknowledges the complexity of the situation, noting that while the Garcia fight holds significant appeal for Benn, a bout with Romero in the UK for the world championship also presents a substantial opportunity. “For Conor, the Ryan Garcia fight is bigger than the Rolly Romero fight, but the Rolly Romero fight in the UK for the world championship is also a very big fight,” Hearn explained. “And you go out and beat Rolly Romero, you have a unification with Ryan Garcia. You make more money, you’re trying to unify the division.”

As the boxing world eagerly awaits the outcome of the Barrios-Garcia clash, the potential matchups for Conor Benn continue to generate excitement and speculation. Whether it’s a shot at the WBC title or a high-stakes bout with Romero, Benn’s future in the welterweight division looks brighter than ever.
