In a surprising turn of events, Eddie Hearn, the chairman of Matchroom Boxing, has openly admitted to ‘misjudging’ the character of Conor Benn, who recently made a high-profile exit to join Zuffa Boxing, led by Dana White. Hearn, who had been Benn’s promoter since his professional debut in 2016, expressed his devastation and took personal responsibility for the departure.

‘I blame myself because I forgot it was boxing,’ Hearn confessed in a recent interview. ‘I felt that the loyalty we’ve shown would never put us in this position. I never really needed to push Conor Benn to sign a new contract previously. I made a mistake because I misjudged the character.’

Benn’s move to Zuffa Boxing was finalized on Friday, marking a significant shift in the welterweight star’s career. Despite two failed drug tests that led to the cancellation of a highly anticipated bout with Chris Eubank Jr in October 2022, Hearn had staunchly defended Benn. The fighter was later cleared of any wrongdoing and went on to secure two lucrative showdowns with Eubank Jr, ultimately gaining revenge in November 2023 after an initial defeat in April.

Benn’s deal with Zuffa is reportedly a one-fight agreement worth eight figures, according to industry insiders. Despite the shift, Benn has expressed his willingness to continue working with Hearn. ‘First and foremost, I want to thank Eddie and the entire team at Matchroom for everything they’ve done for me over the past decade,’ Benn stated. ‘From guiding me when I first turned pro to headlining stadium shows, they stood shoulder to shoulder with me during the tough times.’

Benn’s journey with Matchroom has been nothing short of remarkable, and he acknowledges the support and guidance he received. However, the opportunity presented by Zuffa Boxing was one he couldn’t refuse. ‘I’d love Eddie to continue to be part of my team and for our partnership to evolve in this new chapter,’ Benn added. ‘I’m filled with excitement and hunger for what’s ahead with Zuffa Boxing.’

The fighter’s ambitions are clear: he wants legacy fights, the biggest nights, and the grandest stages. ‘I fear no man at any weight, and I’m ready to give the fans the fights they’ve been calling for. I’m in my prime, and together we have bold, ambitious plans,’ Benn declared.

Throughout his professional career, Benn has trained with Tony Sims at the Matchroom Gym. However, he has recently been training in Los Angeles, raising questions about his future training arrangements. Despite the uncertainty, one thing is clear: Conor Benn is poised for a new chapter in his career, and the boxing world will be watching closely.
