Familiar Foes Set to Clash: David Benavidez Takes on Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in Cruiserweight Title Bout

The boxing world is abuzz with excitement as David Benavidez and Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez prepare to face off in a highly anticipated cruiserweight title bout on May 2, 2026, during Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Benavidez, the undefeated light heavyweight champion, is moving up to cruiserweight to challenge Ramirez for his WBA and WBO titles. This matchup pits two fighters with extensive professional experience and contrasting styles against each other. Benavidez, known for his youth, power, and recent dominance at light heavyweight, will be facing off against the veteran savvy of Ramirez, who boasts 18 more fights and 146 additional rounds under his belt.

The bout was announced by Benavidez following his impressive TKO win over Anthony Yarde in November 2025 at light heavyweight. Benavidez showcased his jab control and late power, busting up Yarde in rounds 5-6. Ramirez, a former light heavyweight titleholder, lost to Dmitry Bivol in 2022 but currently holds the cruiserweight straps after beating Joe Smith Jr. in 2023.

The stylistic contrast between the two fighters is set to make for an exciting matchup. Benavidez’s aggressive, power-punching orthodox approach will be tested against Ramirez’s high-volume southpaw output and durability. Benavidez has already begun training specifically for the bout, posting previews of his preparations on social media.

The familiarity between the two fighters is a key aspect of this matchup. Both are well-scouted U.S.-based pros with public tape, and analysts see this as a must-watch bout in 2026. Benavidez’s size and recent stoppage rate give him the edge in power at cruiserweight, where he can exploit Ramirez’s age and southpaw vulnerabilities. Ramirez’s volume and jab could extend the fight, but Benavidez’s early camp start signals confidence in breaking him down.

Expect a high-action test between these two fighters, with Benavidez likely to impose his pressure and look for a late TKO. Ramirez will need to use his early points to try and secure an upset via decision. This bout is set to elevate the profile of the cruiserweight division, as Benavidez continues his quest for undisputed status.

As the boxing world waits with bated breath for this epic clash, one thing is certain – the familiarity between Benavidez and Ramirez will make for an unforgettable fight. Will Benavidez’s power and youth be enough to overcome Ramirez’s experience and savvy, or can the veteran fighter use his volume and jab to secure a shocking upset? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – this is a fight you won’t want to miss.
