In the heart of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Coliseo Roberto Clemente played host to a night of electrifying boxing action on January 3, 2025. The event, presented by DAZN and MVP Promotions, showcased a 12-bout card, with a particular emphasis on female pugilists. Notably, three of the female bouts featured three-minute rounds, a departure from the traditional two-minute duration aimed at enhancing safety and competitiveness.

The main event of the evening was a World Female Featherweight unification bout between the seasoned southpaw champion Amanda Serrano and the youthful challenger Reina Tellez. Serrano, holding the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation titles, entered the ring with a wealth of experience and a formidable record of 47-4-1 with 30 KOs. Despite her age of 37, Serrano’s ring generalship and power made her the overwhelming favorite against the undefeated but less experienced Tellez, who boasted a record of 13-0-1 with 4 KOs.

The betting odds reflected the disparity in experience and power, with Serrano favored at around -2000 to -2500, while Tellez was the underdog at +900 to +1000. Key factors influencing these odds included Serrano’s extensive championship experience across seven weight divisions, her higher KO percentage, and her status as the reigning undisputed women’s featherweight champion. Additionally, Serrano’s physical attributes, including a height advantage and reach, contributed to her dominance in the lower female weight classes.

In the co-main event, former boxing and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm faced off against WBA lightweight champion Stephanie Han. The bout, expected to start between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. ET, drew significant interest due to Holm’s crossover appeal and the intriguing matchup. Han, the MVP product, ultimately outboxed Holm, retaining her WBA lightweight title via a technical decision after an accidental headbutt led to a stoppage at 1:44 of the seventh round.

The main event saw Amanda Serrano overcoming a swollen right eye to defeat Reina Tellez by unanimous decision. The extended three-minute rounds likely played a role in the competitive nature of the bout, as Serrano’s experience and power were tested by the determined challenger. Despite predictions favoring a knockout, Serrano’s victory by decision underscored the resilience and skill of both fighters.

The evening’s action began with free prelims on YouTube at 3:15 p.m. ET, followed by the main card at 8:00 p.m. ET. The main event, featuring Serrano and Tellez, was expected to start around 11:00 p.m. ET, depending on the duration of the undercard bouts. The card also included a significant bout between Yankiel Figueroa and another competitor, adding to the night’s excitement.

In conclusion, the night of boxing in Puerto Rico delivered thrilling action and memorable performances. Amanda Serrano’s triumph in the main event and Stephanie Han’s technical mastery in the co-main event highlighted the skill and determination of female boxers. The use of three-minute rounds in several bouts added a unique dimension to the competition, showcasing the evolving landscape of women’s boxing.
