IBF Mandates Oliha-Thompson Showdown for Middleweight Crown

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has officially decreed a middleweight title bout between the formidable Etinosa Oliha and the tenacious Shakiel Thompson. This highly anticipated matchup is set to fill the vacancy in the 160-pound division, promising a thrilling contest between two of boxing’s most promising talents.

In a related development, the IBF has made it clear that Jai Opetaia, the current cruiserweight champion, will face the consequence of being stripped of his title should he proceed with his scheduled fight for the inaugural Zuffa Boxing World Cruiserweight title against Brandon Glanton. The IBF’s decision stems from its policy of not recognizing Zuffa Boxing as a sanctioned body, thereby rendering the bout unsanctioned.

Initially, the IBF had approved Opetaia’s fight under the condition that it would not be a unification bout and that any belt awarded would be considered a trophy or token of recognition. However, following a recent news conference, it became evident that the Zuffa World Cruiserweight title would indeed be contested. This revelation led the IBF to withdraw its sanction of the optional defense, effectively issuing an ultimatum to Opetaia: defend the IBF title or pursue the Zuffa Boxing title.

Despite assurances from Opetaia’s team that the fight would not be a unification bout, the IBF has stood firm on its decision. The organization has not engaged in any discussions with Zuffa Boxing representatives, further solidifying its stance. The IBF belt was prominently displayed by Opetaia during the pre-fight events, with the Zuffa Boxing belt positioned between the two fighters, symbolizing the high stakes of the upcoming match.

The cruiserweight bout between Jai Opetaia and Brandon Glanton, scheduled for Sunday, March 8, was intended to mark the first world championship fight for Zuffa Boxing, led by UFC CEO Dana White and Saudi dealmaker Turki Alalshikh. However, the IBF’s recent actions have cast a shadow over the event, threatening to strip Opetaia of his IBF cruiserweight title if he proceeds with the fight for the Zuffa Boxing belt.

Despite the IBF’s threats, Opetaia’s world-championship talent remains undeniable. The upcoming fight promises to be a spectacle, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcome. The IBF’s decision has added an extra layer of intrigue to the event, ensuring that all eyes will be on the ring come fight night.

As the boxing world watches with bated breath, the stage is set for a dramatic showdown. The IBF’s mandate for the Oliha-Thompson bout and its stance on Opetaia’s title defense have set the scene for a weekend of high-stakes boxing action. Whether Opetaia will risk his IBF title for a shot at the Zuffa Boxing belt remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the world of boxing is in for an unforgettable weekend.
