In a bold move that has sent ripples through the boxing world, Lewis Crocker has decided to part ways with his long-time coach, Billy Nelson. The Belfast native, who recently claimed the IBF world title, insists that this decision was not driven by any discord but rather by a relentless pursuit of improvement and a desire to push his boundaries.
Crocker’s departure from Nelson’s tutelage came as a surprise to many, especially considering their recent triumph. Just four months ago, under Nelson’s guidance, Crocker delivered a career-defining performance, defeating Paddy Donovan at Windsor Park to claim the IBF world title. This victory was the culmination of a highly successful partnership that began in early 2023, during which Crocker remained unbeaten in eight fights, steadily climbing the ranks to world level.
However, Crocker believes that sometimes, to reach new heights, one must step out of their comfort zone. “It was a very tough decision to make,” Crocker admitted. “I was very comfortable in Scotland, had great friends there, and everything was well-sorted for me. But perhaps it was too comfortable, and I needed to push myself out of that comfort zone to make a fresh start. I feel like there’s a lot I can improve on, and I could be better in many aspects.”
As with any high-profile split, there has been speculation and a search for blame. But Crocker is keen to stress that he is not looking for a fight or to point fingers. He maintains that he has never publicly criticized Nelson and believes that much of the tension has been fueled by social media commentary rather than his own words.
“I’ve seen that he’s said things and that he’s said I’ve said things. But I’ve never said anything,” Crocker clarified. “People say things on social media, and he reacts. I think it’s quite silly. I remember after the first Walker fight, all I saw was comments about leaving Billy. But after the first Donovan fight, I didn’t see one comment telling me to stay with Billy, and I stuck with him then.”
Crocker’s decision has prompted a strong response from Nelson, who felt insulted by suggestions that Crocker had taken their partnership as far as it could go. Nelson also questioned the credentials of Crocker’s new coaching setup. However, Crocker remains focused on his goal of continuous improvement, especially as he prepares to face world-class fighters in the future.
“It was a big decision to make, and I stuck with him then,” Crocker said, reflecting on his past choices. “But if I feel as a fighter that I can be better, I need to make changes. I don’t want to be going into fights knowing I’m not at my best.”
As Crocker embarks on this new chapter, the boxing world watches with anticipation. His journey is a testament to the fact that in the pursuit of greatness, sometimes the toughest decisions are the ones that lead to the most significant growth.
