Maxi Hughes, the seasoned Yorkshire boxer, is gearing up for a high-stakes bout in Dublin this Saturday. Hughes, known for his tenacity and skill, is not just aiming to add another paycheck to his account but is determined to secure a victory against Pierce O’Leary. With a track record of defeating notable Irish boxers like James Fryers, Paul Hyland Jr, Jono Carroll, and Gary Cully, Hughes is confident in his ability to extend his winning streak.
The experienced fighter accepted the challenge on short notice, stepping in to replace O’Leary’s original opponent, Mark Chamberlain. Despite the limited preparation time, Hughes is unfazed and focused on his goal. “I wouldn’t say it’s been a full training camp,” Hughes admitted. “We got the fight on two weeks’ notice. The week before I got the phone call, I was up in Belfast doing a week’s sparring with Colm Murphy. Other than that, I was just keeping in shape.”
While many view this bout as a prime opportunity for O’Leary to shine on home turf, Hughes has crossed the Irish Sea with a different agenda. “I’m confident enough in accepting the fight,” he stated. “I’m not just here to get paid. I truly believe in my own ability to secure the win.” Hughes’ mentality remains unwavering; winning is always the ultimate objective. “That’s every fight,” he explained. “It’s not just this fight in particular. Every fight is always about getting the win.”
The veteran boxer’s competitive spirit and ambition continue to drive him. “I’ve still got ambition as a fighter,” he said. “And I’ve still got that ego where I want to win. I don’t just come and lay down.” Hughes plans to leverage his experience and ring IQ to adapt and overcome whatever challenges arise during the match. “Just adapt,” he said. “Make whatever adjustments I need to make and do what I need to do to win.”
Having shared a bill with O’Leary in the past, Hughes has seen a couple of his fights. However, he leaves the detailed analysis of O’Leary’s style to his coaching team. “I just let my coaches do the studying and they tell me what I need to know,” he said. With his sights set on victory, Hughes is ready to step into the ring and prove his mettle once again.
