Pacquiao Questions Mayweather’s Motives in Upcoming Rematch

In the latest twist of the long-standing saga between two boxing legends, Manny Pacquiao has expressed skepticism over Floyd Mayweather’s recent claims regarding their upcoming rematch. Mayweather’s assertion that the September bout will be an exhibition rather than a professional fight has raised eyebrows, particularly those of Pacquiao, who seems to suspect a touch of gamesmanship.

According to initial announcements, the fight was slated to take place at The Sphere in Las Vegas, with Netflix as the broadcast partner. The event was touted as a fully sanctioned professional fight, promising to reignite the rivalry that began with their 2015 bout, which many felt fell short of the hype.

However, Mayweather’s recent statements have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the nature of the rematch. “As of right now, we don’t know exactly where the fight is going to be at,” Mayweather said, adding to the confusion. This ambiguity contradicts earlier announcements from both Netflix and Mayweather’s own camp, which had indicated that Mayweather would be resuming his professional boxing career after signing a multi-fight deal with CSI Sports/Fight Sports.

Mayweather further muddled the waters by stating, “It’s an exhibition, so we’re both winners,” emphasizing that the rematch with Pacquiao would not be a professional fight. This declaration has left fans and analysts alike questioning the future of the highly anticipated bout.

The original “Fight of the Century” in 2015 saw Mayweather claim a unanimous points victory over Pacquiao, retaining his WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight world titles. The upcoming rematch was expected to be Mayweather’s first professional fight since his 2017 victory over Conor McGregor. However, Mayweather’s recent comments suggest a shift in plans, with the bout now being framed as an exhibition.

Adding to the intrigue, Mayweather has also expressed his intention to participate in an exhibition bout with heavyweight icon Mike Tyson, a match that was announced last year but lacks a confirmed date, location, or broadcast partner. This further complicates the landscape of Mayweather’s potential career curtain call.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Pacquiao rematch, Mayweather remains committed to other exhibition fights, including one with kickboxer Mike Zambidis set for June in Greece. This leaves the boxing world in a state of flux, with the future of the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch hanging in the balance.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the boxing community is eagerly awaiting further developments, hoping for clarity on what promises to be a historic event, regardless of its final form.
