In a monumental announcement that has sent shockwaves through the combat sports community, Ronda Rousey, the trailblazing former UFC champion, is set to make her long-awaited return to the octagon. The 39-year-old MMA icon will face fellow pioneer Gina Carano, 43, in a highly anticipated showdown on May 16, 2026. This epic encounter will headline Netflix’s inaugural live MMA broadcast, marking a significant milestone in the streaming giant’s foray into live sports.

The bout, officially announced on February 17, 2026, will take place at the state-of-the-art Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, California. The featherweight (145 lbs) contest will be contested over five rounds of five minutes each, with both fighters donning 4oz gloves. This event is a collaboration with Most Valuable Promotions, further solidifying its place in combat sports history.

Rousey, who has not competed in MMA since her UFC appearance in December 2016, is a legend in the sport. She is the first female UFC champion, with six consecutive title defenses, and a UFC Hall of Famer. Her accolades extend beyond MMA, as she is also an Olympic Bronze Medalist in Judo (2008) and a three-time WWE Women’s Champion. Rousey’s return to the octagon has been nearly a decade in the making, with the fighter noting that this comeback has been nine months in the planning following her most recent pregnancy.

Gina Carano, Rousey’s opponent, is equally renowned for her contributions to women’s MMA. Carano’s last professional fight was a first-round TKO loss to Cris Cyborg on August 15, 2009, at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg. That bout was historic, as it marked the first time women headlined a major MMA event. Carano’s return to the sport is eagerly anticipated by fans worldwide.

Both Rousey and Carano are credited with bringing women’s MMA into the mainstream, and their upcoming clash is seen as a tribute to the sport’s past, present, and future. Rousey stated, “This fight is for all MMA fans, past, present, and future.” The event will be live and exclusive on Netflix, available at no additional cost for subscribers, marking the platform’s first-ever live MMA broadcast.

Before this announcement, Rousey had been living a private life focused on motherhood since leaving WWE in 2023. However, training videos she posted in late 2025 fueled rumors of a potential return, which have now been confirmed. A formal press conference for the event is scheduled for March 5, 2026, at the Intuit Dome, where more details about this historic matchup will be revealed.

As the MMA world eagerly awaits this clash of titans, one thing is certain: Rousey vs. Carano is set to be an unforgettable night of action, celebrating the rich history and bright future of women’s MMA.
