In a recent turn of events, WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia has stirred the pot in the boxing world by labeling a fellow fighter as the most ‘horribly overrated’ in the sport. Garcia’s assertion comes with a caveat, suggesting that the hype surrounding this particular boxer is ‘premature’ and perhaps unwarranted. This bold claim has sparked a wave of discussions and debates among boxing enthusiasts and pundits alike.

Garcia’s journey to the top has been anything but straightforward. Despite his impressive knockout of Luke Campbell for the WBC Interim lightweight title in January 2021, it took him over five years to finally claim world honors. This prolonged ascent to the pinnacle of the sport has given Garcia a unique perspective on the challenges and pressures faced by modern boxers.

The tension between Garcia and current WBO welterweight titleholder Devin Haney has been palpable, with both fighters engaging in a heated exchange on social media. Garcia’s assertion that Haney is ‘terrified’ was met with a swift response from Haney, who challenged Garcia to sign up for drug testing. Their encounter in April 2025 in Brooklyn, USA, ended in controversy, with Garcia initially winning by unanimous decision, only for the result to be overturned due to a failed drug test. The fight was ultimately ruled a no-contest, adding another layer of complexity to their rivalry.

Garcia’s professional record stands at an impressive 25 wins (20 by knockout) and two losses, while Haney boasts 33 wins (15 by knockout) and no losses. These statistics underscore the high stakes and intense competition in the welterweight division. As Garcia prepares to make his Zuffa Boxing debut, he aims to take the undefeated record of Cortes in a highly anticipated 10-round lightweight main event.

The boxing world is no stranger to controversy and heated rivalries. The recent exchange between UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier and former lightweight title challenger Nate Diaz is a testament to this. Cormier’s criticism of Diaz’s fighting career was met with a fiery response, highlighting the personal and professional tensions that often simmer beneath the surface in combat sports.

As the boxing landscape continues to evolve, the opinions and analyses of seasoned fighters like Garcia provide valuable insights into the sport’s dynamics. Whether it’s calling out overrated fighters or engaging in high-stakes rivalries, the world of boxing remains as captivating and unpredictable as ever.
