In the wake of Muhammad Ali’s stance against the U.S. Army draft in 1967, the boxing world was left in a state of flux. Stripped of his title and license, Ali’s status as the heavyweight champion became a contentious issue. While some loyalists believed Ali remained the true champion until he lost in the ring or retired, others sought to move forward and crown a new king. The Ring magazine, upholding tradition, kept Ali’s name at the top, but the sport was ready to turn the page.

The World Boxing Association organized a tournament, which saw Jimmy Ellis emerge victorious, claiming the title. Meanwhile, states like New York and Illinois recognized the undefeated Joe Frazier as the new champion after his impressive victory over Buster Mathis. As Ali’s legal battles dragged on, the stage was set for a monumental showdown between Frazier and Ellis.

On February 16, 1970, at the iconic Madison Square Garden, where Frazier had previously triumphed over Mathis and Jerry Quarry, the two titans faced off. Two weeks prior, Ali graciously stepped aside, relinquishing his claim to the title to allow the sport to progress. Despite Frazier being the clear favorite, Ali expressed his belief in Ellis’s abilities, praising his former sparring partner’s style and talent.

The fight began with Ellis showcasing his skills, using a sharp jab and a precise right hand to keep Frazier at bay, winning the first round. However, the tide turned in the second round as Frazier’s strength and power took over. The pace was relentless, especially for heavyweights, and Frazier dominated, landing devastating blows to Ellis’s body and head.

Early in the third round, a massive left hook from Frazier staggered Ellis, effectively ending any hopes of an upset. Frazier continued his onslaught, nearly knocking Ellis down twice. Ellis’s courage was the only thing that kept him standing, while Frazier returned to his corner with a confident grin.

Ellis’s strategy in the fourth round was to land a significant shot to slow Frazier’s pace, but his efforts were in vain. Frazier closed the distance with remarkable efficiency, battering Ellis across the ring. The outcome was clear as Frazier’s superior strength and power proved too much for Ellis to handle.

This historic clash not only settled the debate over the heavyweight championship but also showcased the relentless power and determination of Joe Frazier, solidifying his place in boxing history.
