In the annals of boxing history, Muhammad Ali stands as a colossus, his legacy etched in the memories of fans and foes alike. Ali’s career was marked by encounters with formidable opponents who either struck fear into his heart or earned his deepest respect. These fighters, each a champion in their own right, played pivotal roles in shaping Ali’s illustrious journey.

One of the first fighters to instill a sense of caution in Ali was Sonny Liston. The towering heavyweight champion, known for his intimidating presence and devastating power, posed a significant challenge to the young and brash Cassius Clay. Their first encounter in 1964 ended with Ali’s shocking victory, but it was Liston’s sheer physicality and reputation that initially made Ali wary.

Joe Frazier, another legendary figure, was the man who gave Ali some of his most grueling battles. Their trilogy, spanning from 1971 to 1975, was a testament to their mutual respect and the fierce competition that defined their rivalry. Frazier’s relentless pressure and punching power, particularly in their epic encounter known as the "Thrilla in Manila," pushed Ali to his limits and earned Frazier a place among those whom Ali feared and admired.

Ken Norton, with his unorthodox style and granite chin, also left a lasting impact on Ali. Their 1976 rematch, where Ali suffered a broken jaw, demonstrated Norton’s ability to challenge the greatest fighter of his era. Ali’s respect for Norton was evident in their subsequent encounters and the mutual admiration they shared.

Larry Holmes, a former sparring partner turned formidable opponent, presented a unique challenge to Ali in their 1980 bout. Holmes’ technical prowess and relentless work rate tested Ali’s resilience, and their fight served as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the inevitable decline of even the greatest champions.

These fighters, among others, contributed to the rich tapestry of Ali’s career. They were the ones who made him fear for his safety and earn their respect through their skill, determination, and heart. In the end, it was these encounters that defined Ali’s legacy and cemented his status as "The Greatest."
