In a development that has set the boxing world abuzz, Errol Spence Jr., the former unified welterweight champion, is reportedly considering a return to the ring. Spence Jr., who has been conspicuously absent since his ninth-round stoppage loss to Terence Crawford in their undisputed welterweight title clash in July 2023, has never officially hung up his gloves. Rumors are now swirling about a potential matchup with former world champion Tim Tszyu.
Spence Jr., known as ‘The Truth,’ hinted at a possible comeback during an interview last month. The boxing community has been rife with speculation, and the latest name to emerge as a potential opponent is none other than Tim Tszyu. This rumor gained traction when former world champion Paulie Malignaggi, who is currently in Australia for Nikita Tszyu’s bout with Michael Zerafa, mentioned the possibility of a Spence-Tszyu clash.
“A rumor here down under before we went on air is Tim Tszyu versus Errol Spence,” Malignaggi revealed. “If that is being rumored, I wouldn’t put it past PBC to offer [Jermell] Charlo for Jaron Ennis.”
Tszyu, who has had a rollercoaster of a career recently, suffered a seventh-round retirement loss to WBC super welterweight titlist Sebastian Fundora in July. However, he bounced back with a unanimous decision win over Anthony Velazquez in December. Despite his recent setbacks, Tszyu remains a formidable presence in the welterweight division, ranked in the top 10 by both the IBF and the WBC.
Spence Jr. and Tszyu have been linked before, and the former’s appearance in the ring after Fundora’s victory over Tszyu in March 2024 only fueled speculation. Tszyu, who has won two of his last five bouts, is determined to re-establish himself in the division. George Rose, CEO of No Limit Boxing, which promotes Tszyu, has expressed plans for Tszyu to return to the ring in February.
“As soon as Tim’s ready, we’ll go again,” Rose stated. “We were really interested in trying to put him on at the end of February, but given we’ve just finished December, we’ve just had Christmas, New Year’s, the timing hasn’t worked out perfectly. As soon as he’s ready to go.”
Rose also mentioned that Tszyu is eager to be active in 2026 and aims to make a significant impact in the division. “He wants to re-establish his name in the division, and then start taking names down. We’ll look for an opponent that is a step up. Who that’ll be, we’ll announce very soon.”
As the boxing world awaits official confirmation, the potential clash between Spence Jr. and Tszyu promises to be a thrilling encounter, should it come to fruition. Both fighters have a lot to prove, and a victory for either could significantly alter the landscape of the welterweight division.
