In the realm of boxing, every ounce can tell a story, and the weigh-in for the upcoming IBF super welterweight title bout between Bakhram Murtazaliev and Josh Kelly was no exception. The stage is set for a thrilling encounter at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle this Saturday, with the local hero Kelly tipping the scales slightly heavier than his Russian adversary.

Kelly, weighing in at 153.65lbs, was over a pound heavier than Murtazaliev, who came in at 152.2lbs. This slight difference in weight adds an intriguing layer to the narrative of their upcoming clash. Kelly, who has never shied away from expressing his confidence, has been seen holding Murtazaliev’s belt during their face-offs this week. However, with the belt absent at their final encounter, Kelly maintained his composure, keeping his hands to himself.

The betting odds may favor Murtazaliev, but Kelly is no stranger to defying expectations. A victory for the 31-year-old would not only make him a world champion but also add his name to the list of Britain’s active world champions, joining the ranks of Dalton Smith, Fabio Wardley, Jazza Dickens, Nick Ball, and Lewis Crocker.

Kelly’s journey to this point has been marked by resilience and determination. Since his sole professional loss to David Avaneysan in 2021, Kelly has secured seven consecutive victories, including a first-round knockout of Flavius Biea in June. His recent form suggests he is peaking at the right time, ready to challenge for the world title.

Murtazaliev, on the other hand, brings a formidable record to the ring. With 17 of his 23 bouts ending inside the distance, his power is undeniable. Yet, Kelly has openly dared Murtazaliev to bring an aggressive style, confident that it will play into his hands. “I want him to try and take my head off,” Kelly stated during Thursday’s press conference. “Try and hurt me, and that will suit me down to a tee.”

Kelly’s strategy seems clear: he aims to become world champion by leveraging his strengths and capitalizing on every opportunity that presents itself during the fight. His focus is on performing in the little moments, enjoying himself, and taking each step as it comes. “I believe I’m the new IBF world champion,” Kelly asserted, exuding confidence and determination.

The stakes are high for both fighters. The winner of this bout could potentially be lined up for a unification fight with the victor of the Xander Zayas and Abass Baraou clash, which takes place later on Saturday in Puerto Rico. Additionally, Kelly has already signed to face WBA interim champion Jaron Ennis, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn, adding another layer of excitement to the potential outcomes of this fight.

As the anticipation builds, one thing is certain: the IBF super welterweight title bout between Bakhram Murtazaliev and Josh Kelly promises to be a night of high drama and intense action. Boxing fans around the world will be watching closely as these two warriors step into the ring, each aiming to etch their name into the annals of boxing history.
