Nearly three months have passed since Tom Aspinall’s heavyweight title bout against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena. The fight, which headlined the event, ended abruptly in the first round when Gane poked Aspinall in both eyes, leaving the champion unable to see and continue.
The bout was declared a no contest, allowing Aspinall to retain his title, but the aftermath has been far from easy. The 32-year-old Brit has been dealing with impaired vision, requiring surgery and leaving him unable to train. Aspinall described the recovery process as ‘a nightmare.’
‘It’s been a bit of a long process,’ Aspinall explained. ‘With eyes, unlike other injuries, they don’t just fix them straight away. They try to let them heal naturally because it’s risky, but it’s been a challenging time.’
