In a stunning turn of events, the No. 20 Miami (OH) RedHawks tasted defeat for the first time this season, falling 87-83 to the UMass Minutemen in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Thursday. The RedHawks, who had been riding high on an unbeaten streak, saw their perfect season shattered in a dramatic comeback by UMass.

The game, held in Cleveland, Ohio, seemed to be firmly in Miami’s grasp as they built an 11-point lead at 69-58 with just eight minutes remaining. However, the Minutemen had other plans, rallying with a 13-2 spurt that shifted the momentum. The final blow came when Miami’s Byers was called for an offensive foul, giving UMass the ball under the Miami basket with a mere half-second left on the clock.

Leonardo Bettiol was the standout performer for UMass, scoring an impressive 25 points and leading his team’s charge to victory. The loss marks a significant moment in the college basketball season, as Miami (OH) had been one of the few remaining undefeated teams.

Now, the burning question on everyone’s mind is whether the RedHawks will still secure a spot in the coveted March Madness tournament. Despite the loss, Miami (OH) boasts a remarkable 31-1 record, which should still make them a strong contender for a place in the Field of 68. Many bracketologists have the RedHawks pegged as a No. 10 or No. 11 seed, indicating that their tournament hopes are still very much alive.

The MAC Tournament has always been a stage for intense competition, and this year was no different. UMass, seeded eighth, proved that anything can happen in tournament play, ending Miami’s dream of a perfect season. The RedHawks’ non-conference schedule, which some critics argue was not challenging enough, may come under scrutiny as the selection committee deliberates.

Miami (OH) Athletic Director David Sayler has been vocal in defending the team’s credentials, especially after comments from critics suggesting that the RedHawks would need to win their tournament to secure a spot. The next 72 hours will be crucial as the team awaits its fate, hoping that their stellar season will be enough to earn them a place in the NCAA Tournament.

For now, the RedHawks must regroup and reflect on a season that, despite this setback, has been nothing short of extraordinary. The road to March Madness is fraught with uncertainty, but one thing is clear: Miami (OH) has left an indelible mark on college basketball this season.
