In a surprising turn of events, heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has hinted at a potential shift in his career plans, suggesting he might bypass a third showdown with Tyson Fury in favor of a bout with the formidable Agit Kabayel. The Ukrainian boxing sensation recently outlined a three-fight plan to culminate his illustrious career, beginning with a match against Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in the historic setting of Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza.

Usyk’s original plan included a trilogy fight with Fury, whom he has already defeated twice. However, the WBC’s approval for Usyk to defend his title against Verhoeven came with the stipulation that he must face interim titlist Kabayel next. This development has sparked speculation and excitement among boxing enthusiasts.

“Three fights remain,” the 39-year-old champion revealed. “Rico Verhoeven is first. The second fight will be against the winner of the Wardley versus Dubois bout, and the third is planned to be against my friend, Tyson Fury.” However, Usyk’s recent comments have introduced a new variable into this equation.

“Maybe I’ll fight Kabayel,” Usyk mused. “Perhaps we’ll change from Tyson Fury to Kabayel. This is my plan, but ultimately, I don’t know what fate has in store.” This statement has sent ripples through the boxing community, as fans and analysts alike ponder the implications of such a matchup.

Kabayel, the WBC interim heavyweight champion, has been a vocal contender, and his fans have been clamoring for a shot at Usyk. The Ukrainian champion acknowledged this, saying, “I understand Agit’s fans wanting this fight. But I must live my life for my team and my child. I’ve waited for my chances many times. Maybe it’s possible. Maybe I’ll fight Agit. Right now, I don’t have a definitive answer.”

Usyk’s potential pivot to face Kabayel instead of Fury adds a layer of intrigue to the heavyweight division. Verhoeven, a former kickboxing champion, will be fighting for only the second time as a professional when he steps into the ring with Usyk. The Ukrainian champion’s decision to relinquish his WBO title has set the stage for Wardley to face Dubois on May 9, adding further complexity to the heavyweight landscape.

As the boxing world awaits Usyk’s final decision, one thing is certain: the heavyweight division is in for a thrilling ride. Whether Usyk chooses to face Kabayel or stick to his original plan of a Fury trilogy, fans can expect high-stakes action and unforgettable moments in the ring.
