In a night that will be etched in the annals of boxing history, Xander Zayas ascended to new heights, becoming the youngest active unified world champion. The Puerto Rican sensation outclassed Abass Baraou in a gripping super welterweight unification bout, held in the vibrant atmosphere of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Zayas, a name that is rapidly becoming synonymous with boxing excellence, showcased his prowess and determination in a fight that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. The bout was a rollercoaster of adrenaline and skill, with both fighters displaying their unique strengths and strategies.

The judges’ scorecards told the tale of a closely contested battle. Two judges scored the fight 116-112 in favor of Zayas, while the third had a differing opinion, scoring it 112-116 for Baraou. Despite the split decision, Zayas’ victory was a testament to his relentless spirit and unwavering focus.

From the opening bell, Zayas set the pace, his fluid movements and precise punches earning him the first round. Baraou, however, was not one to back down. He retaliated with a series of right hands, a signature move that kept Zayas on his toes. The back-and-forth continued, with Zayas maintaining a slight edge round after round.

The ninth round saw Zayas land a devastating right hand, wobbling Baraou and momentarily shifting the momentum. Baraou, displaying true grit, survived the onslaught but was unable to secure enough rounds to sway the judges’ decision in his favor.

Zayas’ journey to this historic moment has been nothing short of remarkable. Since winning the WBO title in July, he has been on an unstoppable trajectory, culminating in this unification bout. Baraou, on the other hand, had his own impressive run, claiming the WBA’s interim title in August before being elevated to full champion.

At just 23 years old, Zayas has etched his name in the record books, becoming the youngest active unified champion. His achievement is not just a personal triumph but a source of immense pride for Puerto Rico, as he becomes the first from his homeland to accomplish this feat.

As the boxing world looks ahead to 2025, Zayas’ name is sure to be at the forefront. His victory over Baraou is a clear indication that he is a force to be reckoned with, a rising star who is poised to illuminate the sport for years to come.
