In a breathtaking display of skill and determination, Dalton Smith ascended to the pinnacle of the super lightweight division, claiming the WBC title with a sensational fifth-round stoppage against the formidable Subriel Matias at the iconic Barclays Center in New York. This victory marks a significant milestone in Smith’s career, as he overcame his toughest challenge to date in spectacular fashion.

Matias, a seasoned champion with a record of 23-3 and 22 KOs, had previously held the IBF title before losing it to Liam Paro in June 2024. However, he rebounded by securing the WBC crown in July of the previous year with a majority decision against Alberto Puello. Smith, on the other hand, entered the ring with an unblemished record of 19-0 and 14 KOs, having captured British, Commonwealth, and European titles, as well as fringe WBC belts. His last bout was a dominant points victory against Mathieu Germain in his hometown of Sheffield.

The fight began with Smith establishing his jab and landing a crisp right hand in the opening round. Matias, known for his aggressive style, attempted to walk Smith down but found himself on the receiving end of a sharp uppercut. The second round saw both fighters trading blows, with Smith matching Matias’s intensity. However, Matias began to exploit Smith’s energy expenditure in the third round, landing a powerful left hook and gaining the upper hand in the exchanges.

Undeterred, Smith continued to trade blows with Matias, landing a significant left hook in the fourth round and following up with a hard combination that visibly shook the champion. The fifth round started with Matias backing Smith up, but the tide quickly turned. Despite suffering a cut on his left eye, Smith unleashed a series of left hooks that rocked Matias, culminating in a devastating overhand right that sent the Puerto Rican to the canvas. Although Matias managed to rise, his legs were unsteady, prompting the referee to halt the contest.

The undercard featured several impressive performances, including Nestor Bravo’s highlight-reel knockout of Pedro Campa in the second round. Former two-time world champion Emmanuel Rodriguez returned to the win column with a ten-round points victory over Fernando Diaz. Jeyvier Cintron secured a first-round stoppage win against Victor Efrain Sandoval, while Keith Colon maintained his perfect record with a seventh-round knockout of Alberto Guevara. Light heavyweight prospect Arjan Iseni forced Mario Bedolla Orozco to retire after three rounds of their scheduled six-round bout.

Dalton Smith’s triumphant performance not only showcased his exceptional talent but also signaled the dawn of a new era in the super lightweight division. As the dust settles on this memorable night of boxing, the sport eagerly anticipates the next chapter in Smith’s burgeoning career.
