In a thrilling showdown at the Barclays Center in New York City on January 10, Dalton Smith dethroned Subriel Matias to claim the WBC super lightweight title. The bout, which headlined a Fresh Productions card, was a rollercoaster of action, with both fighters showcasing their prowess before Smith’s spectacular stoppage victory.

Smith, maintaining a flawless record of 19-0 with 14 KOs, started the fight with a strategic jab and controlled the ring from the outside. However, as the rounds progressed, the intensity escalated. By the third round, Smith and Matias were exchanging heavy blows, with Matias seemingly gaining the upper hand. Yet, Smith held his ground and had his moments of dominance.

The turning point came in the fifth round when Smith landed two powerful right hands that visibly shook Matias. Seizing the moment, Smith moved in and delivered a crushing right hand that sent Matias to the canvas. Although Matias managed to rise, his unsteady legs prompted the referee to halt the fight, crowning Dalton Smith the new WBC super lightweight champion.

Following the victory, Smith’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, shared his thoughts on the fight and revealed a telling post-fight conversation with Matias. Hearn, clearly elated, recounted Smith’s strategic shift: “Dalton used his footwork to navigate through the early rounds, but by the fourth, he decided to stand his ground and engage in a war. No one has ever done that to Matias. After the fight, Matias admitted, ‘I’ve never been hit like that before.'”

Hearn continued, praising Smith’s performance and resilience: “You can win world titles in various ways, but tonight, Dalton became a superstar. He deserves every bit of this victory. And it’s only January 10th; Matchroom is on fire!”

When questioned about his concerns during the third round, Hearn confessed, “I was worried throughout the entire fight. The first round was a masterclass in boxing, but as the fight progressed, it became increasingly intense. Dalton felt Matias’ power and was comfortable in the ring, believing he could hurt him. He landed a body shot about 45 seconds before the knockout that really hurt Matias. Then, he took his time and delivered the sensational right hand that sealed the victory.”

As the dust settles on this remarkable victory, the boxing world eagerly awaits Dalton Smith’s next move. The Sheffield fighter has undoubtedly made a significant impact on the global stage with this triumph over Matias.
