In the annals of boxing history, few rivalries have captivated audiences quite like that of Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta. Their second encounter on February 5, 1943, in Detroit’s Olympia Stadium, was a testament to their enduring appeal and the public’s insatiable appetite for their battles.

Just four months prior, the two had met for the first time at Madison Square Garden. Robinson, a welterweight prodigy, had dominated the fight, showcasing his superior speed and skill. LaMotta, the tough middleweight grinder, had won at best two rounds. The outcome was a one-sided decision victory for Robinson, who was already a high-profile contender with an impressive streak of 125 consecutive wins, both amateur and professional.

Given their first fight’s success and both fighters’ preference for staying active, a rematch was inevitable. This time, the stage was set in Robinson’s hometown of Detroit. The Olympia Stadium was sold out, with fans eager to witness another chapter in this burgeoning rivalry.

Both men entered the ring in top shape, but Robinson came in light at 144 pounds, conceding a significant weight advantage to LaMotta. Whether this weight difference ultimately decided the outcome remains a topic of debate. However, unlike their first meeting, LaMotta came on strong in the latter rounds, dominating Robinson and securing a historic victory.

For the first seven rounds, it appeared Robinson was on his way to another decision win, commanding a points lead. But then, a desperate LaMotta dramatically turned the tide. Starting in the eighth round, LaMotta began to railroad Robinson, applying relentless pressure and doing damage on the inside. The extra pounds undoubtedly aided LaMotta as he bulled his way past Robinson’s reach, landing heavy shots both upstairs and down.

At the end of the eighth round, a right to the body followed by a vicious left hook to the head sent Robinson through the ropes. He never did beat the count; the bell rang to save him from what looked like an almost certain knockout loss. Robinson survived the last two rounds, but LaMotta remained in charge, battering his man and sealing a truly historic victory.

This loss would be the last for Robinson for another eight years, a testament to his skill and resilience. However, bad news awaited LaMotta, who met Robinson for a third time less than a month later, again at The Olympia. LaMotta managed to score another knockdown, putting Robinson down for an eight count in round seven. But otherwise, Robinson was sharp, keeping LaMotta on the end of his punches and nailing his man with stiff uppercuts on the inside.

Thus, one of boxing’s greatest rivalries continued to unfold, captivating audiences and etching the names of Robinson and LaMotta into the sport’s history.
